Head northwest and reach Dogmersfield House - a modernised Queen Anne building.  But it was once a Bishop’s Palace from at least the 13th century - and in the 16th century, attended by both Henry the Sixth and Seventh,

The secretary of the latter was in residence there.  This man was given the job of arranging the marriage between Henry’s eldest son, Arthur and a princess from Spain - Catherine of Aragon. 

She landed at Plymouth and the travel-worn young woman met the King and his son at Dogmersfield.

A possibly fraught first encounter, given the language barrier, but as reported: ‘Here were the goodliest words uttered to each other, in the language of both parties.’  

Ice broken, the couple danced to the music of minstrels - and married at St Paul’s.

Alas! - Arthur died at 18, leaving Catherine to marry his younger brother, Henry.  She produced a daughter but no son, becoming the fall-woman in a succession of momentous events that rebound down the centuries.
